Dear incoming freshman,
In my experience, my whole life has been stressful, so college didn’t come with any surprises for me. But, if you’re like the average spoiled kid, college will be tough. If you’re lucky enough to live here, you’ll actually have to do your own laundry and clean your room, scary, I know! Don’t expect to get good grades always, many times I felt like I passed in a great essay but I received Bs on it (I guess that’s just how English teachers roll). Citing essays and writing multiple drafts will be annoying, but I’m sure this is nothing new to you. Citing seems so extra sometimes, I don’t know why we can’t just write the author and article title, but there’s a great thing called “easybib” that cites things for you. I have no idea how to do a hanging indent so easybib saves me a lot of time for every essay. In college writing, you’ll mostly peer review so be prepared for that. Give people honest advice, don’t just compliment their essay. I don’t live on campus and I don’t get drunk every weekend so I can’t offer much advice there. Be sure to call your parents, American parents apparently miss their kids when they leave. Please, change your sheets more than once a year (that shit gets dirty). Participate in class, silent classes are awkward and boring for everyone, raise your hand, speak, it’s not difficult. Talk to people in your classes, if you like someone, talk to them in person, please DO NOT slide into their DM’s instead of talking in person! I can’t function unless I get at least 10 hours of sleep every night so get enough rest. Watch out for the freshman 15 (it’s real). Drink lots of water, wash your skin, get enough rest, literally everyone is sick here, try not to get sick. There will be a lot of teachers you don’t like because they seem to not put effort in their class or care about their students. Casey was a great professor, he has a lot of respect for his students and can tell when we are all stressed, you won’t get many professors like that so enjoy it!
